Bonsai & Orchid Care

Watering Bonsais Plants

DISCLAIMER : The content provided in this section is not warranted or guaranteed. The content provided is intended for entertainment and/or educational purposes in order to introduce to the reader key ideas, concepts, and/or product reviews base on experiences.

A bonsai requires attention, as does every living creature. Bonsai trees are like human beings in many ways. They need food, air, and water to keep them alive and lots of love to keep them happy.

It is always essential to water bonsai regularly and according to its demand. Fertilization

could continue without exceeding the limit of fertilizer per month.

In order for your bonsai to develop fully, it is advisable to put them outdoors for a period of

time. Constant care should be taken to ensure that pests do not take hold during this period, as it is more favourable for them to manifest themselves under these conditions.

Over-watering is as harmful as under watering. Water the leaves, underneath as well and also the soil. Stop when the water begins to trickle out of the drainage holes.

Lighting For Indoor Bonsai

The Tropical Bonsai Inc. - Your Go-To Destination for Bonsai Lovers

Indoor bonsai trees need plenty of light to thrive.

Lighting: Place the Bonsai where there’s good daylight.

Try to avoid direct sunlight for indoor Bonsai plants.

Artificial Lighting: If natural light is insufficient, use grow lights for 10-12 hours daily.

Fertilizing & Soil

Soil for Bonsai

Different type of bonsai plants prefers different type of soil to some extent. But the safest and productive soil should have following characteristics:

  • Good water retention capacity and draining with good fertilizer absorption.
  • Containing less fertilizer (The soil structure and amount of fertilizer in soil can be calculated only by analysis). Hence, it is better to use soil with little fertilizer at the beginning. Later on, according to the need of fertilizer can be supplied
  • Soil must be free from any disease germs or eggs or larves of harmful insects.
  • Alkali and acidity reaction of the soil must not be strong. The soil should not contain poisonous substance injurious to plant growth.

Temperature

Keep in temperature between 65°F and 75°F (18°C – 24°C) to grow and maintain good and healthy Bonsai.

Avoid placing near heating vents, radiators, or air conditioners.

Humidity Control

Indoor environments can be dry, which affects bonsai growth.

  • Increase Humidity:
    • Place a humidity tray filled with water and pebbles beneath the pot.
    • Mist the leaves occasionally.
    • Group plants together to create a micro-humid environment.

Bonsai Pots

It is important to choose the right pot for the bonsai

tree, since in order to be healthy, the bonsai tree must

be well adapted to its pot:

  • If the pot is too small, growth would be difficult.
  • If the pot is too large, the crop will grow too fast.

In general, the depth of the pot is twice the base

diameter of the trunk. Bonsai with a large root system

(such as those pruned in the waterfall style) require a

deeper pot, while those with multiple trunk styles are

presented in flat pots.

Orchid Care

Keep moist and water the orchid

Orchids need moisture from 50-80%. So, when taking care of orchids and encountering the temperature in an environment with lower humidity, orchid growers can use a curtain to limit the plant's transpiration. Another precaution is to plant the orchid in a pot containing gravel or pebbles and water. The flower player must ensure that the plant is always on gravel, pebbles and does not touch the water. Watering this plant is very important and orchid caretakers need to do it carefully and on schedule.
